Arguments were heard by a federal judge over Iowa’s new immigration law.

The law gives police the authority to arrest immigrants with outstanding deportation orders or those who have been denied entry into the United States. The U.S. Department of Justice, ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) of Iowa and Iowa Migrant Movement for Justice are all challenging the bill. They argue that it conflicts with federal law. The state argues that the federal government sets standards for immigration policy and that states have the right to enforce those standards.
