HOLSTEIN, Iowa (Iowa Media Wire) — The Holstein High School Class of 1974 is celebrating a major milestone during the annual Kinderfest event.
Classmates from half a century ago gathered at the country club to reminisce and share stories from both their past and present.
Iowa Media Wire 9 caught up with two special members of the class, high school sweethearts who have now been married for 44 years. They shared memories of their first date which took place just down the road from where they gathered for the reunion on Friday.
“Our first date was trap shooting over near the sewer ponds. She’s very good at shooting,” Scott Hompland said of Marvel Hammer. “And that’s the other reason we’re so good together. It’s important to try not to be a good target.”
Hammer added that the friendships made over 50 years ago in high school have stood the test of time.
“Catch up! Where did you go, where did you live, where have you gone. And you know, it’s funny, it’s those friendships that you can be away for 50 years and it’s amazing, you’re just back the same as you were,” Hammer said.
