SIOUX CITY, Iowa (Iowa Media Wire) – Sioux City’s longstanding history with fastpitch softball was honored Saturday evening with a special ballgame. The second annual Legends Day of Softball was played at Hubbard Park Saturday evening.
Legends that played ranged in age up to 80 years old and had all once played at Hubbard Park in its 96 years of existence.
“I got to play with them when I was younger and now I get to play with them when I’m older, and I think that’s a big thing,” said Sioux City Fastpitch Softball Association president Peter Sandman. “Some of our guys can’t play because of their age, but they can still show up and see the guys that do play.”
Tonight’s game also featured a grand opening of the Tommy Rempp section behind home plate and a tribute to the Sioux City Ghosts.
The legendary park is now on the National Register of Historical Places after community restoration.
“A few years ago this park was not in very good shape,” said Sandman. “It was on the brink of maybe never being used again, so in a few short years we’ve come a long way. We’ve accomplished a lot of goals, I mean take a look around, it’s a beautiful place.”
