SIOUX CITY, Iowa (Iowa Media Wire) — The man who was killed allegedly attempting to steal copper wiring was attempting to steal it from the Boys and Girls Home, court documents reveal.

According to court documents, Denair Byars, 39, and Jarrod Schweitzberger, 37, entered a building that hosted heating equipment on property owned by the Boys and Girls Home.

Documents state that they were allegedly there to steal copper and other items from the facility.

At some point, Byars ran out of the building to flag down a passerby, asking them to call 911 to help Schweitzberger.

Schweitzberger was taken to the hospital where he was declared dead.

According to the documents, Byars is charged with 2nd-degree burglary.

According to a release from the police department, police responded to a burglary in progress on the 2100 block of Court Street at around 4:20 a.m. on Wednesday.

When officials reached the scene, they found a male suspect who had been electrocuted. Police believe he was electrocuted while attempting to steal copper wiring.

The man, identified as Jarrod Schweitzberger, 37, was taken to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Police said that a second person, Denair Byars, 39, was also at the scene. He was arrested and charged with 2nd-degree burglary.

The police department said they are working with the property owner to gather more information on this incident. Anyone with information is asked to submit a tip to Crime Stoppers at 712-258-8477.

Police also want to use this as an opportunity to remind people that stealing copper wiring and other metals can be dangerous. Police are urging citizens that if they see something suspicious they should report it as it could save lives.
