SIOUX CITY, Iowa (Iowa Media Wire) — While there are a lot of places to find help after the floods, there are also people looking to take advantage of this disaster.
The Iowa Better Business Bureau told Iowa Media Wire 9 that scams increase following a natural disaster. For victims, it’s important to vet contractors, ask people you trust for recommendations, and be wary of door-to-door contractors who may not even be from the area. Also, don’t just go with the first company that submits a low offer.
“Floods are unique. The worst damage is in areas of your house and your property that you cannot see,” Chris Coleman with the Iowa Better Business Bureau said. “So over the next weeks, get to know your house very well. Make sure that the contractor is not putting a Band-Aid on your property or your project when you really need surgery.”
If you’re looking to help with flood recovery, make sure you verify who you’re donating to. Bad actors will take advantage of generosity during disasters.
