LENOX, Iowa (WHO) — The Iowa Department of Public Safety said a man who robbed a southwest Iowa bank Monday afternoon took his own life after leading authorities on a high-speed chase.
The DPS said the Taylor County Sheriff’s Office was called to a robbery at the Iowa State Savings Bank in Lenox at 1:30 p.m. A male suspect entered the bank, demanded money, and then left the scene on a motorcycle.
Authorities pursued the man into Adams County and he continued to try to flee at a high speed. The DPS said the suspect lost control of the motorcycle and crashed into a farm field, then fled from the crash on foot.
Multiple law enforcement agencies converged in the area to find the suspect and as they narrowed in on his location, the DPS said he fired one round, causing a fatal self-inflicted wound.
The name of the man has not been released. A forensic autopsy will be done by the Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner later this week.
