UPDATE (6/24/2024 @ 3:21 p.m.) — The Iowa DOT announced a short-term closure of northbound I-29 near Sloan lasting six hours.
Monday from 6 p.m. to midnight, northbound I-29 drivers will be routed around construction work using the ramps at the I-29/Iowa 141 interchange (exit 127) in Sloan.
This scheduled closure of northbound I-29 will allow crews to safely place girders for the new bridge over I-29. The first closure at this location took place on the night of June 17, and this closure is the last of two needed to place girders, the Iowa DOT said.

UPDATE (6/24/2024 @ 7:15 a.m.) — South Dakota Officials say the Interstate 29 closure was extended between exits 2 and 26 to aid in southbound traffic flow to and through the designated detour route.
The following detour routes remain in place around the closure:
- Southbound I-29 traffic will be detoured onto S.D. Highway 50 west at exit 26 to Vermillion, then south to South Dakota Highway 19 into Nebraska where it becomes N.E. Highway 15, then continue south to N.E. Highway 12 east in Nebraska to U.S Highway 20 east in Nebraska, then to exit 144 for I-29 south at South Sioux City, IA.
- Northbound I-29 traffic will exit onto Highway 20 west, then north on Highway 12 and Highway 15 in Nebraska, continuing onto Highway 19 in South Dakota to the Vermillion exit to Highway 50 eastbound to I-29.
Drivers are urged to use caution when driving on state and local roads in southeast South Dakota for the next several days. Drivers are also warned not to drive through rushing or standing water over roadways as the road may be washed out underneath.

UPDATE (6/23/2024 @5:53 p.m.): South Dakota officials closed Interstate 29 in southeast South Dakota starting at 6 p.m.
The South Dakota Department of Transportation said that the northbound and southbound lanes on Interstate 29 from Exit 2 to Exit 9 will be closed as the Big Sioux River is predicted to crest Sunday around 7 p.m. It is expected to “send a significant amount of water into low lying areas.”
Officials are working to build a berm across both lanes of I-29 at Exit 4. The berm will connect with an existing levee on the east side of North Sioux City.
South Dakota officials have provided detour routes in place of I-29.
Southbound Traffic: Take S.D. Highway 50 west at exit 26 to Vermillion, then south to S.D. Highway 19 into Nebraska where it becomes N.E. Highway 15, then continue south to N.E. Highway 12 east in Nebraska to U.S Highway 20 east in Nebraska, then to exit 144 for I-29 south at South Sioux City, Iowa.
Northbound Traffic: Exit onto Highway 20 west, then north on Highway 12 and Highway 15 in Nebraska, continuing onto Highway 19 in South Dakota to the Vermillion exit to Highway 50 eastbound to I-29.
Local traffic is currently allowed into the area until water reaches the roadway.

UPDATE (6/23/2024 @11:11 p.m.): While Interstate 29 is still functional, multiple roads in Siouxland are closed due to the widespread flooding.
Of note, Iowa Highway 12 is closed from I-29 to IA 3 near Westfield. Iowa 511 also shows northbound Highway 75 at C-80 is blocked due to flooding. Iowa Highway 60 between US Highway 75 and Iowa Highway 10 is also closed. There are many other roads throughout northwest Iowa blocked.
Meanwhile in South Dakota, SD-50 from Junction South Dakota 11 South to Iowa is closed due to a surface water hazard. SD-48 from Junction South Dakota 11 North to Iowa is also closed.

UPDATE (6/22/2024 @ 2:22 p.m.): Interstate 29 has reopened northbound and southbound from Sioux City to Sioux Falls, according to the South Dakota Department of Transportation.
The SDDOT said on Facebook that I-29 from Sioux Falls to the South Dakota/Iowa state line has been reopened.
They did state that some water remains on the outside shoulders of the road, but should start to recede as the day goes on.
No travel advisories will remain in place in some areas of eastern South Dakota and motorists are asked to respect all road closures and not drive around barricades. Driving into areas with flood waters can be dangerous and life-threatening. “Turn around. Don’t drown.”

PREVIOUS (6/22/2024 @12:10 p.m.): One lane of southbound Interstate 29 has reopened to traffic from Sioux Falls to the Iowa line, the South Dakota DOT said Saturday around noon.
Authorities warn that there is still some water on the surface and traffic is being guided.
The SDDOT still warns that there are sections of state highways that are experiencing flooding.
PREVIOUS (6/22/2024 @9:09 a.m.): As much of southeast South Dakota and northeast Iowa deal with flooding, roads are being impacted too. That includes Interstate 29 in South Dakota.
I-29 is closed between mileposts 59 and 64 due to flooding. and exits 50 (Centerville) and 62 (Canton) remain blocked.
The South Dakota Department of Transportation said that as of 7 a.m., an alternate route from from Sioux Falls to Sioux city is no longer viable due to parts of the detour in Iowa now under high water. The detour had drivers Us Highway 75 from Sioux City to Le Mars and then take Route 60 to Worthington, Minn., and then taking Interstate 90.
State officials are continuing to recommend to not travel unless absolutely necessary, adding that many sections of state highway in South Dakota are block due to flooding. Below is a look at road obstructions in southeast South Dakota from the SD 511 at Saturday morning.
The Iowa Department of Transportation is also recommending to not travel at this time in Lyon, Sioux, O’Brien, Clay, Emmet, and Dickinson Counties due to flooding. They said that many routes are covered with water or quickly becoming dangerous.
