DES MOINES, Iowa (WHO) — A Des Moines man is in jail after police say he stole one of their unmarked vehicles and then led officers on a short chase Thursday morning.
Jorge Jacobo, 25, is charged with first-degree theft and eluding. He’s being held in the Polk County Jail.
Sgt. Paul Parizek of the Des Moines Police Department said Jacobo was spotted in a parking lot on the south side of the police station, 25 E 1st St, around 8:30 a.m. pulling on door handles of vehicles.
Officers then determined an unmarked SUV for on-call use was missing. It was later learned a spare key to the vehicle had been in the door’s map pocket.
Sgt. Parizek said a police employee spotted the unmarked SUV in traffic and patrol vehicles caught up with it at 16th St. and University Avenue. They pursued the stolen vehicle until 23rd St. and Lincoln Ave., where the chase was ended with a PIT maneuver.
Jacobo was taken into custody without incident.
