SERGEANT BLUFF, Iowa (Iowa Media Wire) — Creepy crawlers are not everyone’s most-loved creatures, but some Siouxland children got to see why these bugs are crucial to everyday living.
The Iowa State University’s Insect Zoo made a visit to the Sergeant Bluff Public Library on Tuesday. Student workers at the zoo came out to talk with the public about different bugs that they have, ranging from spiders to beetles.
There were over 100 kids in attendance. One of the kids said they loved the bugs, specifically the spiders.
“We saw this black spider that had green stripes on it,” Nuella said. “Daddy thinks spiders are cool.”
Lucia Salazar, a specialist with the Insect Zoo, told Iowa Media Wire 9 why bugs and other creepy crawlers are important.
“A lot of people see our bugs as unimportant, but bugs are very important to the world,” she said. “They’re the reason why we have food on our plates and all the clothes that we have. They are so important.”
The Insect Zoo will continue making its 80 stops in 60 days across the state of Iowa, sharing the importance of bugs. More information about the program and its planned stops can be found on its website.
