HOLSTEIN, Iowa (Iowa Media Wire) — While the town of Holstein celebrated Kinderfest Friday, they also observed Flag Day.

Just on the outskirts of town, Holstein has the perfect drive for anyone feeling patriotic. Holstein’s Avenue of Flags is a sight for anyone driving along Highway 20. Each flag lining the road represents a veteran that has a connection to the city of Holstein.

The avenue is now home to more than 500 flags, a large increase from when the tradition began in 2011.

“We’ve had to punch more holes in the ground, so that’s been like ‘oh, we need more holes, we need more flags,'” American Legion Adjutant Post 225 Jamee Hunt said. “Just to know how much this community cares about its veterans and the people that have served, it’s really awesome.”

The avenue is set up three times a year for Memorial Day, Flag Day, and July 4. The flags will be taken down Monday at 6 p.m.
