SIOUX CITY, Iowa (Iowa Media Wire) — The City of Sioux City has laid out their rules for fireworks this Independence Day. They also provided a few safety tips to keep Siouxlanders safe while celebrating the holiday.

During the Fourth of July, fireworks are only permitted in the city on July 3 and July 4 from 1 p.m. until 11 p.m.

Setting off fireworks on property owned by the city such as parks, or on a public roadway, street, or alley is prohibited.

Residents found breaking these rules may be subject to fines that can get up to $500.

The City also wanted to remind residents to be courteous while setting off fireworks. Fireworks can trigger PTSD in veterans. They can also cause anxiety in pets.

Additionally, fireworks can be dangerous. The City has provided a few safety tips to help Siouxlanders stay safe while celebrating.

Prevent Fires

  • Sky Lanterns are NOT allowed in Sioux City.
  • Never allow children to play with or ignite fireworks.
  • Discharge fireworks away from people, houses, and materials that may catch fire.
  • Place spent and unused fireworks in a container of water for a few hours
  • Always have a garden hose turned on and ready nearby.

Prevent Injuries

  • Never experiment with homemade fireworks.
  • Never point or throw fireworks at another person.
  • Never shoot fireworks in a metal or glass container.
  • Only light one device at a time and maintain a safe distance after lighting.
  • Never attempted to re-light a firework.
  • Never hold lighted fireworks in your hand.

Sparklers Are Dangerous

  • Sparklers burn at about 2,000 degrees – hot enough to melt some metals.
  • Sparklers can quickly ignite clothing and children have received severe burns from dropping sparklers on their feet.

Lastly, the City said when in doubt, follow the label instructions on the fireworks and use common sense.
