LE MARS, Iowa (Iowa Media Wire) — A man was arrested in Le Mars on Tuesday after a brief stand off with officials, according to a release.
The release from the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Office said that at around 6:40 p.m., officials received someone saying that they had been assaulted by Chase Kounkel, 39 at their home in the 27000 block of 160th Street.
When officials arrived at the scene, they learned that Kounkel had allegedly burglarized the victim’s home earlier that day and returned in the evening, assaulting the victim. This resulted in serious injuries, according to the release. Court documents state that the victim had a broken nose and a concussion.
About 10 minutes after the report was filed, officials said that they were able to find Kounkel’s vehicle at his home in the 100 block of 1st Ave. NW in Le Mars.
When officials attempted to make contact with Kounkel, he would not answer his door. This led to officials dispatching the Tri-County Emergency Response Team (CERT)
Negotiators were able to resolve the incident peacefully and Kounkel was taken into custody at around 8:50 p.m.
He was initially taken to a local hospital for an evaluation before being taken to the Plymouth County Jail where he has been charged with willful injury causing a serious injury, a class C felony, domestic assault strangulation, third-degree burglary, possession of methamphetamine third, all class D felonies.
Kounkel is being held in the Plymouth County Jail on a $25,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court on June 20 at 8:45 a.m.
The Plymouth County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Le Mars Police Department, Le Mars Fire Rescue, Iowa State Patrol, and the Tri-County CERT.
