The Allamakee County Veterans Museum has a special D-Day exhibit on display throughout the month of June at its location at 105 Allamakee Street in Waukon. The D-Day Display honors Allamakee County D-Day Veteran Sgt. 1st Class Arthur H. Ennullat, who was born in 1907 in Linton Township in Allamakee County.
Sgt. Ennullat served as a glider plane pilot with the 82nd Airborne Division, 320th Glider Artillery Battalion. He earned five service bars, a Combat Infantryman Badge, a Bronze Star, and a Silver Star.
Ennullat participated in combat in Sicily in Italy, the Normandy Invasion, Operation Market Garden, the Battle of the Bulge, and crossed the Elbe River into Germany. The 320th was awarded a Presidential Unit Citation for its service in Normandy. During the war, its 105 mm howitzers fired 2.5 million pounds of high explosives at enemy targets. The glider Ennullat flew was a Waco CG-4 Hadrian (pictured at left below the Airborne logo), which was 49 feet long and was towed by a C-47 transport plane. Videos of Glider and Airborne operations from WWII will be shown at the museum on request.
The display will continue through the month of June. Tour hours include Fridays noon to 4 p.m., Saturdays 9 a.m. to noon, and by appointment. For special tours call 563-568-2954 and leave a message. There is no admission charge, and the museum is handicapped accessible.
