SIOUX CITY, Iowa (Iowa Media Wire) — The City of Sioux City will begin flushing hydrants on Wednesday.
According to a release from the City of Sioux City Utilities Department, the fire hydrant flushing will be done city-wide.
The release states that the flushing is necessary because it helps remove sediment and other things that would make the water dirty. Hydrants are flushed for the following reasons, according to the release.
- “Even the best quality of water can get stale if not used enough. By flushing, the water supply remains fresh.”
- “Flushing helps maintain the water quality in the water mains by removing fine sediment from the water supply which has settled in the water main over time.”
- “Flushing also reduces additional demand for chlorine.”
- This helps the City to determine if a fire hydrant is in good working condition, or if it may need service.”
The City said that during testing periods, residents may experience a drop in water pressure. They also said that water may become discolored. If your water does appear discolored, the City recommends flushing your water until it appears clear.
“If you notice discolored water, run your cold water tap for a few minutes until the water
clears. If it does not clear the first time, wait a few minutes and run the water again. If
the water has not cleared after several hours, call the Utilities Division at 279-6164.
Avoid washing clothes until the water clears. Thank you,” the Utilities Department said.
