SIOUX CITY, Iowa (Iowa Media Wire) — A much-discussed road project in Sioux City, which would add a roundabout among other things, is officially set to begin construction next week.
Bainbridge Construction, LLC plans to begin construction on the Elk Creek Road Construction Project on Monday, June 17, the City of Sioux City Engineering Division announced Tuesday. It will be finished sometime in the middle of October, permitting weather.
The project includes new paving on Elk Creek Road and intersection improvements, according to a release. Along with a new roundabout, improvements include new water mains, a storm sewer, and sidewalk crossings.
On June 3, Bainbridge was awarded the project in an amount of about $1.4 million.
There will be two stages of construction. In stage 1, Elk Creek Road will be closed from Christy Road to Singing Hills Boulevard. In stage 2, the intersection of Christy Road/Old Lakeport Road/Southern Hills Road will be closed to through traffic, with a detour available.
The Sioux City Council approved plans, specifications, and construction costs for the Elk Creek Road Construction Project on May 6.
The project has been a subject of debate. Some residents have raised question and concerns about things like traffic delays and emergency services access, which officials said would be taken into account.
