Attempted murder suspect to be evaluated for mental competency

SPIRIT LAKE, Iowa (Iowa Media Wire) — A Spirit Lake man charged with attempted murder will be required to undergo a mental competency evaluation.

Caleb Crosby, 19, was ordered Thursday to undergo the evaluation. According to court documents, Crosby may have a mental disorder which could prevent him from “appreciating the charges, understanding the proceedings or assisting effectively in his defense.” Proceedings will be stopped until then.

Crosby was arrested on May 5, 2024 and charged with one count of attempted murder, a class B felony, and two counts of first degree theft, a class C felony. He was booked into the Dickinson County Jail and held on a $2 million bond.

According to the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office, authorities responded to a 911 call on Sunday, May 5 at about 5:18 p.m. The caller reported a shooting in Montgomery, Iowa.

When officers arrived, they found the victim and secured the scene. After a search, Crosby was found at about 9 p.m. Crosby had also allegedly stolen a vehicle.

On May 31, Crosby allegedly tried to escape from the Dickinson County Jail, according to court documents. He was charged in a separate case with escape from custody, a class D felony.
