SIOUX CITY, Iowa (Iowa Media Wire) — Western Iowa Tech’s Mass Communication program has announced that they have received a permit to open Sioux City’s newest radio station.
According to a release from WIT, they received a Low Power FM (LPFM) construction permit from the FCC. This permit will allow them to establish and operate a radio station.
The radio station is being called KWSR and will be available at frequency 94.3 FM.
WIT said that this permit will help provide students with hands-on experience in engineering, radio broadcasting, production, and management. The goal is to better prepare the students for future careers.
“Being granted a construction permit is a momentous achievement for our program,” said Mass Communication program coordinator Chris Mansfield. “This opportunity allows us to expand our curriculum and provide our students with practical skills that are crucial in today’s media landscape. We are excited about the potential KWSR-LP has to enrich both our academic programs and student experience.”
The radio station will air a variety of content ranging from news, music, educational programming, sports, and community-oriented content.
The Mass Communication said they are working with students on planning content for the radio station and plan to have it fully operational by the end of 2025.
KWSR will serve as an expansion to the Mass Communication’s online streaming station, Comet Radio. Comet Radio has been operating for 11 years.
