SERGEANT BLUFF, Iowa (Iowa Media Wire) — A court has issued a decision regarding the competency evaluation of a Sergeant Bluff man accused of shooting two people, one of which was fatal.

According to court documents, further court proceedings for Raymond Rogers, 44, have been suspended after being evaluated and deemed incompetent to stand trial.

Records show that Raymond’s legal representative requested a competency hearing after a licensed psychologist informed them that he suffers from mental disorders. These conditions allegedly prevent him from understanding the proceedings or assisting in his own defense.

The documents state that Raymond’s right to a speedy trial will be tolled from June 4 until he has been found competent to stand trial.

Raymond was initially charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder, and violation of a no-contact order.

The charges stem from an incident that took place on February 24, 2023. At 6:47 p.m., authorities received two calls for help at a residence on the 2100 block of Buchanan Avenue.

According to the documents, when law enforcement arrived, they found a 12-year-old boy who had called the police. They removed him from the residence. Upon further investigation, police found three people suffering from gunshot wounds.

A man identified as Gerele Eli Jones would be pronounced dead on the scene, and a woman identified as Ashley Rogers would be transported to a hospital in critical condition. The third person was identified as Raymond Rogers, who was found with an apparent self-afflicted gunshot wound.

Officials later revealed that Ashley Rogers and Raymond Rogers were allegedly “estranged spouses” who were separated at the time of the incident.
