DES MOINES, Iowa — The Minnesota Vikings are partnering with Des Moines Public School District to host the metro’s first girls flag football camp.
The Girls Flag Football Academy is free to attend at Mediacom Stadium and runs from 2pm-4pm today. Parents can sign their kids up online.
Emily Weinberg, the Youth and High School Football Coordinator with the Minnesota Vikings, said that there are already more than 100 girls signed up for the camp.
“We have about 120 girls registered for the Des Moines Girls Flag Academy which is awesome,” Weinberg said.
Des Moines Public School District Harding Middle School has a girls flag football club. Jeanette Carrington, the Student Engagement Coordinator at Harding Middle School, started the club last year and has seen it grow.
“So last year we had about 25 actually come to the game and play that we did amongst ourselves at our own field this year we had 40. 40 kids. 40 kids on the sideline all of them eager to get in cheering each other on from the sidelines,” Carrington said.
Carrington hopes that the school district will help expand girls club flag football to other schools.
“We need to get behind this we can have this at every middle school it doesn’t take a lot of time or effort or money and the Vikings are giving us some funds to get it rolling so lets do it lets make it exciting lets make it inclusive and lets have fun with it,” Carrington said.
