FOR SPEEDS 26-30 MILES PER HOUR OVER THE POSTED SPEED LIMIT THE PENALTY WOULD BE A $250 FINE.
SPEEDS GREATER THAN 30 MILES PER HOUR OVER THE POSTED LIMIT WOULD BE $500 WITH ALL PENALTIES DOUBLED FOR VIOLATIONS WHICH OCCUR IN A ROAD WORK ZONE.
THE NEW FINES WOULD TAKE EFFECT JULY 1ST.
THE CITY COUNCIL SPENT MORE TIME MONDAY DISCUSSING IF THE SPEED CAMERAS SHOULD BE IN USE INSTEAD OF THE CHANGES IN THE FINES FOR SPEEDING.
BECAUSE OF A RECENT CHANGE IN IOWA LAW, SIOUX CITY POLICE HAVE MOVED THEIR TWO TRAFFIC CAMERAS BACK TO THE 3100 BLOCK OF MYRTLE STREET AND TO LINCOLN WAY.
POLICE CAPTAIN JUDY KELLEN TOLD THE COUNCIL THAT’S WHERE THEY WERE PREVIOUS TO THE CHANGES IN THE LAW THAT NOW REQUIRES A STUDY JUSTIFYING THEIR LOCATIONS:
SPEEDCAM1 OC…..YEAR’S WORTH OF DATA. :17
MAYOR BOB SCOTT IS UNHAPPY ABOUT THE ONE CAMERA MOVED BACK TO MYRTLE STREET, BECAUSE HE THINKS THE POSTED SPEED LIMIT THERE IS TOO LOW:
SPEEDCAM2 OC……….CONCERNS ME NOW. :11
MAYOR SCOTT TOLD THE OTHER COUNCIL MEMBERS HE DOESN’T WANT THE CAMERA TO BECOME A PERMANENT SPEED TRAP THERE:
SPEEDCAM3 OC………NOT GOING TO GET THAT. :15
THE COUNCIL APPROVED THE SPEED CAMERA AND CHANGES IN THE FINES 5-0.
