SIOUX CITY, Iowa (Iowa Media Wire) — A Sioux City man is facing life in prison after pleading guilty to possessing and intending to distribute meth.
Chad Hughes, 40, pleaded guilty on May 31, admitting to having almost half a pound of meth that he was looking to distribute to others in Sioux City. He had previously been convicted of a federal firearm-related felony in 2005.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, law enforcement officials tried to stop Hughes and his motorcycle. He then fled, leading to a high-speed pursuit through Sioux City and North Sioux City, South Dakota. At one point, Hughes got off the motorcycle and left behind his backpack.
When officials acquired the backpack, they found meth inside, along with “drug paraphernalia” and other miscellaneous items. Using the contents of the bag, they were able to identify Hughes.
Hughes’ sentencing is set for a future date. He faces a maximum sentence of life in prison, a $10 million fine, and five years of supervised release.
