4th District Congressman Randy Feenstra fended off a Republican primary election challenge from businessman Kevin Virgil.
Feenstra received 60 percent of the votes within the district’s 39 counties compared to Virgil’s 40 percent. Virgil did receive more votes in Buena Vista County. Of the 518 votes in BV County, Virgil got 60 percent of them. Virgil also had slightly more votes in Sac County with 51 percent. Virgil had 60 percent of the votes in his native O’Brien County.
Feenstra, who is seeking a third term in the U.S. House, will face Democrat Ryan Melton in the November general election. Melton was unopposed in the Democratic primary.
Cherokee County Sheriff Derek Scott easily won a Republican primary election against Zachary Smith 82 percent to 18 percent.
For State Representative in District 7 which includes Calhoun, Pocahontas, and Sac counties, Mike Sexton fending off a Republican primary challenge from Wendy Lou Larson 51 percent to 49 percent.
Republicans Travis Sitzmann and Noah Wieseler were facing off for the open State Representative in District 13, which includes Cherokee County. Sitzmann won with over 62 percent of the vote.
Rick Mongan won a close primary battle for Cherokee County Board of Supervisors in District 1. Shane Bellefy defeated three others in a battle for Cherokee District 3 Supervisor.
Kyle Rohlk defeated three others for Ida County District 2 Supervisor.
Peter Seehusen defeated two others for the Pocahontas County Supervisors District 1 representative.
