The Perry Lutheran Homes (PLH) gratefully accepted two grants this week in support of the Meals on Wheels program, a critical initiative that provides year-round nutritious meals and fosters social connections to older adults in Perry, Minburn, Dallas Center, Granger and Woodward.

Minburn Communications and Aureon were the generous donors that each gave $500 in support of the program, which is a lifeline for older adults or others in need who are homebound because of illness or impairment, who are unable to buy or prepare food independently or who are otherwise isolated.

“The cost to operate this vital program exceeds available funding, leaving a significant annual deficit,” said Perry Lutheran Homes Development Director Lynette Groenenboom. “Grants like this from Aureon and Minburn Communications are essential to ensuring the sustainability of Meals on Wheels and the well-being of our community’s most vulnerable residents.”

The Meals on Wheels program prepares, cooks, transports and delivers more than 20,000 meals annually. The service extends beyond meal delivery, however, and also includes daily visits and wellness checks by the program’s drivers.

The $1,000 grant will be used to purchase food supplies from Martin Brothers, a local vendor, Groenenboom said. For more information on how to support Perry Lutheran Homes, contact Groenenboom at 515-465-5316.
