The USDA has confirmed a positive case of highly pathogenic avian influenza in a commercial turkey flock in Cherokee County.
Governor Kim Reynolds today (Sun) authorized a disaster proclamation for Cherokee County effective through July 2nd. The proclamation allows state resources from the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship, Iowa Homeland Security, and other agencies to assist with tracking and monitoring, rapid detection, containment, disposal, and disinfection. The proclamation also waives regulatory provisions related to commercial vehicles responding to affected sites.
The recent detections of bird flu do not present an immediate public health concern, and it remains safe to eat poultry products. Producers should contact their veterinarian immediately if they suspect signs of bird flu in their flocks.
