It’s important to have good mental health because it can help you to cope with stress, have healthy relationships and work productively — among many other benefits.

In fact, mental and physical health are closely connected, and poor mental health is associated with an increased risk of certain physical health problems, particularly heart disease.

Some ways to improve your mental health include:

• Prioritize getting 7-9 hours of sleep every night.
• Practice gratitude. Think about the things you are grateful for.
• Find a physical activity you enjoy, and try to do it every day.
• Practice relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing.
• Make time to do the hobbies you enjoy, such as reading, listening to music and making art.
• Eat nutritious, balanced meals.
• Connect with others, whether by spending time with loved ones or participating in community events.
• Think positively. Hold on to positive emotions when you have them, and try not to dwell on negativity.
• Limit how much news you consume. Reading about or watching stressful or sad events all the time can take a toll on your mental health. Try to only consume news for 30 minutes each day.

If you consistently experience any signs of poor mental health such as trouble sleeping, difficulty concentrating, feeling sad, mood swings, or irritability, talk to your primary care provider or a mental health specialist.
