DES MOINES, IOWA (Iowa Media Wire) – No. 5 seed Bishop Heelan secured history at the IHSAA Soccer State Tournament on Saturday afternoon, as Sergio Mijangos netted the game-winning goal in overtime to clinch the 3-2 win over No. 7 seed Davenport Assumption, earning the Crusaders’ its first State title in program history.
Heelan’s Andres Gonzalez got the scoring started in the 20th minute after a great run finished off by a chip shot over the Assumption goalie, leading 1-0 into halftime.
The Knights responded with the equalizer in the 49th minute turning a free kick into a goal from Billy Moore. But the Crusaders had an answer up their sleeve 10 minutes later with a score from Elias Flanery to put them back in front 2-1.
But the Knights refused to give up. Michael Lynch knotted the match back up at 2-2 behind a goal in the 61st minute, sending the game into overtime.
Then Sergio Mijangos stepped up for the biggest score of his career, burying the game-winning score off an Andres Gonzalez assist to seal the 3-2 victory in OT.
In back-to-back trips to the State tournament, Bishop Heelan claims its first ever boys soccer title.
