SIOUX CITY, Iowa (Iowa Media Wire) — A group of second grade students got a surprise Thursday from their principal.
Every day of the school year, Spalding Elementary School principal Preston Fischer wore crazy polo shirts which the kids enjoyed seeing. So for the last month, he had the kids design a shirt for him to wear on the last day of school.
21 students made shirt designs, and principal Fischer said he couldn’t decide on one winner, so he chose two designs. The kids also had writing assignments to go along with the design project.
“The idea came about to have them design some polos for me as a writing assignment for them,” Fischer said. “So at the front they drew what they wanted, and on the back of the page they had to use details and adjectives to express what they wanted their shirt to look like.”
“It was really hard,” second-grader Tayviana Cohen said, “because we couldn’t copy anything so I was thinking about a fruit and putting faces on them.”
The polo shirt design idea was also inspired by a book that had students complete a writing project along with the art.
