A Grinnell man with a long criminal history was sentenced to 5 years in prison this week, on a Jasper County Felony Eluding charge. 47 year old Jarin James Stoker accepted a plea agreement according to court documents. He pleaded guilty to Eluding over 25 mph above the speed limit, while a charge of Accessory After the Fact was dismissed. District Associate Judge Steven Holwerda approved the agreement and imposed the 5 year prison sentence. He’s also set a restitution hearing in the case for May 21st. The Criminal Complaint against Stoker states that just before 8 p.m. on March 20th…he was driving a car on West 18th Street South in Newton without any lights on, and with license plates that didn’t match the vehicle. An officer initiated a traffic stop, and Stoker attempted to get away by going more than 25 mph above the 25 mph speed limit. The arrest report states he eventually came to a stop on his own in a driveway outside of Newton,  and tried to flee on foot. But he was taken into custody after a brief foot chase. Court records show Stoker has a long list of convictions for various offenses, including drugs and theft, going as far back as 2005.
