DES MOINES, Iowa – Work to fully restore 911 and phone services continues Friday after a water pipe burst at Lumen in Des Moines, causing widespread issues across Iowa.
The service disruption began Thursday morning when the broken water pipe caused damage to the electrical system powering critical equipment at the Lumen building at 10th St. and High St. in Des Moines.
Many public and private organizations statewide were affected by the service disruption to broadband and phones, including landline 911 services. Calling or texting 911 from a cell phone was not affected.
Lumen, also known as CenturyLink, provided its first update on the restoration of some of the services shortly after 8:00 p.m. Thursday, saying landline 911 and phone services had been restored in Davenport, Marshalltown, and Mason City.
Another update shortly before 10:00 p.m. said the “vast majority” of consumer broadband services affected by the broken water pipe had been restored.
Work continues to restore landline 911 and phone service to other affected areas in Iowa.
