SIOUX CITY, Iowa (Iowa Media Wire) — Opportunities at the Sioux City Public Museum to explore history through classes and family activities will be available this summer.

Classes are available on ancient games and pioneer lives, along with hands-on opportunities for young children at Kid’s Thursdays. There will also be Family Field Trips to learn about local history.

The museum’s summer classes and programs will be held from June 13 through July 25. They are for children ages three and older.

Pre-registration is required for summer classes. Class sizes are limited; pre-payment is required to hold reservations unless otherwise noted. Registration forms may also be dropped off at the museum or mailed with payment. Scholarships are available based on financial need. However, pre-registration is not required for family programs, including Kid’s Thursdays and Family Field Trips.

Summer classes

Become an Ancient Gamer.

Here, participants can travel back to ancient times to try out the earliest board games and craft a version to take home.

It will be held on Tuesday, June 25 from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Ages 8-12 are able to participate.

Tales and trails: A Pioneer Adventure. Here, participants experience candle making, square dancing games, crafts, and a STEM challenge.

This class will be available on Tuesday, July 23. The class for ages 6-8 will be held from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., and the class for ages 9-12 will be held from 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m.

The Family Programs

Kid’s Day. Here, adults and children will explore hands-on learning activity stations together in a supervised classroom setting.

This program will run from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on June 13, June 27, July 11, and July 25.

On June 13, explore Sea Creatures – Big and Small; on June 27, get Down on the Farm; on July 11, see Monkeys, Dragons, and Tacos; and on July 25, it’s Dino Day.

Family field trips. Here, participants can explore some of Sioux City’s favorite historical spots with a museum guide for free.

The field trips are from 10 a.m. to 11:15 a.m.

On June 9, there will be a Jackson Street Neighborhood Walking Tour from 6:30 p.m. to 7:45 p.m.

On Friday, June 21 there will be a trip to the War Eagle Monument and Bruguier’s Cabin. Participants are asked to meet at the War Eagle Monument and then travel to Bruguier’s Cabin in their own vehicles.

On Friday, July 19 there will be a trip to the Floyd Monument and First Bride’s Grave. Participants are also asked to meet at the Floyd Monument and then travel to First Bride’s Grave in their own vehicle.
