SHELDON, Iowa (Iowa Media Wire) — Heavy windfall and rain rapidly moved through Sheldon on Friday evening, causing damage.
The damage from the wind event caused several vehicles at Southwest Wholesale RV to be destroyed. Many items were blown around, along with some roofs needing some serious repairs. Crews were already starting to clean up from the event while the downpour of rain came down.
One employee at the Taco John’s located across from the RV business described to Iowa Media Wire 9 what he saw.
“All of a sudden, I seen debris flying, and my ears started to pop, and then the windows started vibrating,” Dalton Heokstra said. “And I ran out to the lobby and looked out and all I was seeing was a whole of bunch of campers flying.”
The city’s emergency management director Wayne Barahona said he’s thankful that nobody got hurt from the significant wind event.
“The number of campers here is in the teens of the damage that’s been done here, so we’re awfully thankful that everyone’s okay,” he said. “It was just, it was all inventory, and obviously there’s a lot of structural damage, but I know that the community of Sheldon is here to help.”
Officials are waiting for the National Weather Service to confirm exactly what kind of weather event happened in Sheldon Friday night.
