DES MOINES, Iowa – Almost all 911, phone, and internet service that was disrupted across the state, due to a water pipe break at a Lumen building in Des Moines Thursday, has been restored, according to the company.
Lumen released the latest update on repair progress around 10: 25 a.m. Friday. A representative for the company said that almost all services had been restored as of 12:30 a.m. Friday.
The broken water pipe at the 10th St. and High St. building caused damage to the electrical system that powered critical equipment providing 911, broadband, and phone service to commercial and residential customers across the state.
Multiple law enforcement agencies and health systems were unable to receive communications and 911 calls were only able to come in from cellphones.
Landline 911 service and phone services were first restored to Davenport, Marshalltown, and Mason City Thursday night. Lumem said a majority of its consumer broadband customers had service restored shortly before 10:00 p.m. Thursday.
Friday morning, Polk County Emergency Management Agency confirmed landline 911 had been restored but there were still some other phone and internet issues remaining for businesses, dispatch centers, and hospitals.
They recommend checking hospitals’ official social media pages and websites for information on how to contact them about non-emergency issues.
