Roger Hanson of Springfield, Missouri

Roger Hanson passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 28, 2024, at the Mercy Hospital in Springfield, Missouri. Roger was formerly a resident of Manilla, Iowa, and Carroll, Iowa.

A visitation will be held Saturday, June 1 from 9-10 a.m. at the Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home in Perry. The funeral will follow at 10 a.m. The family will have a private burial at a later date.

Roger Lee Hanson was born Nov. 15, 1932, in Concord, Nebraska, to Paul J. and Thelma Laura DuVall Hanson.

He attended school at Concord High School, graduating as valedictorian with the class of 1950.

Roger was united in marriage to Betty “Joann” Salmon in Wayne, Nebraska, on Sept. 6, 1956.

He served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Alaska.

Once discharged from service, he attended the Sioux City Barber College. His employment included owning his own barber shop, laboring as a hired farm hand and in a pork plant and managing a mobile home community.

The foundation of Roger’s life was faith, family and service to others. He loved his family dearly and made sure to support each family member throughout their lives.

He could often be found at sporting events, cheering from the sidelines, working on house projects and yard work and delivering garden produce to family and friends. He lived his life as a servant to others.

Roger found immense joy in gardening, playing cribbage, cracking walnuts, watching Western shows and listening to gospel music.

His favorite sports teams were the Nebraska Cornhuskers and the New York Yankees.

Roger loved visiting family and friends, especially if it involved sharing one of his favorite treats, such as watermelon, German chocolate cake, homemade ice cream and orange sherbet.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Thelma Hanson; three sisters; seven brothers; his wife, Joann Hanson; a grandson, Andrew Chambers; and a granddaughter, Jessica Mancilla.

He is survived by his children, Diane Chambers of Omaha, Donna (Stan) Bandow of Jonestown, Texas, Dan (Karen) Hanson of West Des Moines, Julie Hanson of Springfield, Missouri, and Laura (Kowboy) Wulf of Nixa, Missouri; nine grandchildren, Angela Yoder, Caitlin Dillon, Colby Bandow, Kyle Bandow, Emily Hanson, Sarah Green, Brandi Merrick, Joel Merrick and Cory Christiansen; 19 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; brother, Charles Hanson of Omaha; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to any VA or the Senior Center, 404 S. Main St., Nixa, MO 65714, in memory of Roger Hanson.
