SERGEANT BLUFF, Iowa (Iowa Media Wire) — Midwest Honor Flight received a donation that will help honor veterans in the area.

On Thursday, the Fareway store in Sergeant Bluff presented a check to Midwest Honor Flight to help transport American veterans to Washington, D.C. to visit memorials committed to honoring the services of themselves and veterans. The nonprofit received $5,884 with the support of Fareway customers giving out donations.

Mike Hammel, grocery manager at the store, said that the community had an impact in helping send the veterans to D.C.

“It’s just a great thing for the community to see that really we need to thank these guys for their sacrifice and our freedom,” Hammel said.

Midwest Honor Flight CEO Aaron Van Beek said the money will help their mission.

“We are a nonprofit organization that flies World War II, Korea, and Vietnam veterans out to Washington, D.C. for a day of honor to experience and see all the memorials that dedicated their sacrifice and sacrifice at no charge to the veteran,” he said.

Fareway customers donated through their regular shopping in a two-week campaign at the beginning of May.

Seven veterans will be sent out to fly to Washington, D.C. on June 5.
