SIOUX CITY, Iowa (Iowa Media Wire) — A Sergeant Bluff man accused of murder has requested a competency hearing.
According to court documents, the lawyer for Raymond Rogers, 44, requested a competency hearing in Woodbury County District Court after he was told by a licensed psychologist that he is suffering from some mental disorders that prevent him from appreciating the charges, understanding the proceedings, or effectively assisting in his own defense.
Rogers is charged with one count each of first-degree murder and attempted murder, first-degree burglary, and stalking-dangerous weapon regarding a shooting in which one person died and two others were injured in late February of 2023.
Officials report they had received two calls for help from a residence on the 2100 block of Sergeant Bluff on February 24, 2023, with the second caller allegedly identifying Rogers as the suspect.
Upon entering, they located a 12-year-old boy who had allegedly called in the report and removed him from the residence. Officers continued noticing broken glass from a sliding glass door of the residence.
Officers found three people, one being Rogers who appeared to have had a self-inflicted gunshot wound under his chin.
Officials found one man and one woman suffering from gunshot wounds at the scene of the shooting. Later officials confirmed that the man was pronounced dead and the woman was transported to a local hospital in critical condition.
Raymond Rogers was extradited from Douglas County, Nebraska, to Woodbury County, Iowa after Rogers’ medical treatments in Omaha.
