SIOUX CITY, Iowa (Iowa Media Wire) — A man federally charged for robbing a Sanborn, Iowa bank has pleaded not guilty.

Del Evans, 40, of Sanborn appeared in the Sioux City federal courthouse on Wednesday, where he pleaded not guilty to bank robbery.

The federal court filing states that authorities received a report of a bank robbery at the Sanborn Savings Bank in the afternoon of January 22, 2024. The suspect went into the bank and handed a teller a note that it was a robbery and to “give him all the money and to not look left or right,” a witness said. No weapon was displayed or threatened. The suspect was given an unknown amount of $20 bills and then left.

Based on a description of the suspect and well as other information, Evans was suspected of committing the crime and identified by the teller when shown a picture.

Surveillance was set up outside of Evans’ residence, just across the street from the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn middle school, which was placed on a “loose lockdown” that day.

Evans later surrendered to police and was arrested. Evans allegedly admitted to the robbery in an interview with authorities.

After interviewing Evans and his brother, authorities executed a search warrant at the residence and found the stolen money in a yellow shoe box in the basement. In total, authorities recovered $5,308.

A grand jury indicted Evans on April 17. A jury trial has been scheduled to take place starting on June 17.

Evans had been originally charged with second-degree robbery and second-degree theft in O’Brien County. Those charges were dismissed in early April after the state learned Evans was being tried federally.
