Woodbury County supervisors further debate LEC insurance premium

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (Iowa Media Wire) — Tuesday’s Woodbury County supervisors meeting featured a long exchange between two members.

At last week’s supervisor meeting, Jeremy Taylor requested the board reallocate funding from the new LEC’s maintenance budget to pay an insurance premium on the building rather than take the funds from reserves. The board ended up taking no action on the request at last week’s meeting.

Taylor’s request again appeared on Tuesday’s agenda, again with no official action taken. Chairman Matthew Ung did present what he called “missing context” related to supervisor Taylor’s comments from last week, which lead to a nearly half-hour back and forth with board member Taylor.

“Discuss this for three weeks and act on it again and again, seems unproductive to me,” Ung said.

“I believed by putting this on the agenda, it would allow supervisors to vote on this,” Taylor said, “and without allowing them to vote on this, it is going to come from reserves… Do you know what the balance of the liability fund right now is?”

“I think you’re going to tell me,” Ung said. “Dissent is welcomed here, that is why it is on the agenda even though I knew it would lead to this unproductive conversation.”

After the meeting concluded, and while talking with reporters, chairman Ung again voiced his concerns over Taylor’s actions.

“We shouldn’t be on this board to simply draw attention to ourselves or draw attention to the bad news when we have a plan to deal with the things that come up with the LEC,” Ung said.

He also said that following last week’s meeting, he and three members of the board all heard concerns about what Taylor said.

Additionally, Ung said the issue with the LEC insurance premium is no longer a problem. Since the revised substantial completion date for the new LEC is after July 1, the premium becomes a 2025 budget item and reserve funding won’t be needed.
