SIOUX CITY, Iowa (Iowa Media Wire) — Western Iowa Tech Community College’s board approved a settlement with former J1 Via students on Wednesday.

Western Iowa Tech President Terry Murrel said in a release he appreciates the board’s action with resolving the matter.

“We appreciate the board’s decisive action and are pleased to have this matter resolved,” said Murrell. “The college’s enrollment and finances are strong, and we remain focused on providing an enriching educational experience for all WITCC students. This matter will not impact or influence our programs or future plans.”

The college said in a statement that while they feel the program did not meet the standards set, they deny the allegations that were made against them. They also said that the students who were involved in the program had been allowed to leave at any time and were offered flights home when the pandemic began.

“This is an intentional decision made to close a chapter and restore focus on what we do best which is providing outstanding, cost-effective education for our students,” said Board Chair Russell Wray. “With this behind us, we have a tremendous opportunity to continue to grow and serve the need for affordable, applicable degrees for our students.”

The terms of the settlement have not been disclosed.

This is only the conclusion of one of two lawsuits filed against the college regarding the J1 Visa Program.
