SIOUX CITY, Iowa (Iowa Media Wire) — While the winter recreational season was cut short at Cone Park in Sioux City, the summer fun is already getting started there.
This year, Cone Park is opening their new mountain bike trail. The bike trail will provide different types of trails such as traditional, flow, technical, and a jumping trail.
Recreation Superintendent for Parks and Recreation John Byrnes said that there’s something for everyone at the park.
“We have about ten and a half miles of single tracks, so that’s where bike riders will kind of ride on a bike trail which has different features,” Byrnes said. “Some have jumps, and some have no jumps because they are for beginners. In addition to the ten and a half miles of trails, we have a paved pump track… and we have other jump lines, so there are going to be unique features.”
Not only does this new mountain bike trail provide different types of trails, but also amenities on these trails, from a pump track, tot track, beginner skills development, intermediate skills development, and a progressive jump line.
“This has been in the works for a couple of years now,” Brynes said. “We had a couple of really great local community donors that came in, so most of this is privately fundraised. The city was in for some money as well, but this is such a cool event because it is so driven by demand and what the community wants to see.”
Brynes said the new trail will have an overall positive impact on the community in bringing in tourists to Sioux City.
“This amenity is just going to be unbelievable for both the local community and tourists alike,” Brynes said. “People seek this out. There is nothing like this between Sioux City, Iowa, and now Bentonville, Arkansas. We have something very unique, it’s going to be open to a ton of users from walkers and hikers to mountain bikers.”
The new mountain bike trail will open on Friday, June 14th, 2024, followed by a ribbon-cutting celebration at 1:30 p.m. The next day a trail festival will be held on Saturday, June 15th from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
At the festival, there will be a variety of fun for the whole family from professional rider demonstrations to food and music.
