During its Jan. 18 meeting, Bethany Waltersdorf from the Iowa Department of Transportation showed at the request of the city as its council reexamines a four-to-three lane conversion on Highway 25 from Russell to Townline streets. As word about the proposal spread on news outlets and social media, Creston residents were quick to comment online. During a public hearing held Tuesday night during the regular council meeting, feedback was the same – the public is not interested.
Despite a report from an engineering firm stating the poor condition of the Girl Scout Cabin at McKinley Park, Creston Parks and Recreation Board agreed Tuesday for Tara Kincade to continue to find options to preserve the building. Last week, Veenstra and Kimm, an engineering firm in West Des Moines, provided the board with an assessment of the building that dates back to 1925.
Creston Activities Booster Club donates $40,000 to the the activities department during Creston’s basketball game Jan. 28. The funds will be used to purchase uniforms and equipment for all the school’s activities. Eleven of Creston/Orient-Macksburg’s 14 wrestlers advanced to district competition as the Panthers dominated their first home sectional meet since 1996. Seven Panthers won their weight class as Creston/O-M amassed 270 points for the team title Saturday. The corresponding 2A sectional at Harlan was postponed by Saturday’s snowstorm, so district matchups next Saturday at Atlantic won’t be determined until after tonight’s matches.
Creston girls completed a regular-season sweep of Red Oak with a 55-44 victory on the Tigers’ court Friday. With Denison-Schleswig’s loss to Carroll Kuemper Catholic, Creston moved ahead of the Monarchs in fourth place in the Hawkeye 10 at 6-4, with a 7-11 overall record.
The United States Department of Agriculture held a public hearing Thursday afternoon regarding the proposed closing of the Union County Farm Service Agency office in Creston. The public meeting was attended by nearly 100 people. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced Jan. 9 the U.S. Department of Agriculture plans to close 259 domestic offices, facilities and labs across the country.
Next week, Peggy Slotsky of Corning will release her seventh book, “Parents! Tips to Make Decisions, Solve Problems.” The 64-page book is part of her “If Only I Knew Then What I Know Now” series, which Slotsky continues to publish “to help empower single parents and provide them a resource to take control of their families.”

It’s not easy being a relatively unknown candidate from Iowa running for President, just ask Jeffrey Marsh of Fairfield. Marsh campaigned for President in Creston Tuesday and addressed an audience of four at Southwestern Community College.
Members of the South Central Iowa Regional E911 Service Board met Monday night to hear an update on the feasibility and costs of the system. “We’re hoping to have it on the ballot this November,” said Mike King, Union County supervisor and E911 service board member.
The resignation of Willie Dobbins, 21, as a member of the Creston Police department has been accepted by Police Chief Frank Holliday, effective Friday. Dobbins has been on the force since July 30, 1970, and would have completed a six-month probationary period on Saturday.

Fifty-six couples, also five teenage dancers, attended the Peppy Steppers Square Dance Friday night at the Creston Community Center. Among those were 35 guest couples from Corning, Ellston, Diagonal, Greenfield, Richland, Winterset and Afton.
Union County has been alotted $89,000 for Rural Environmental Assistance Program (REAP) for 1972, William J. Hawks, executive director of the county ASCS office said today. Hawks said $4,450 of the allocation is earmarked for technical assistance but the remainder, $84,500, will be available for cost-sharing with farmers for the construction of conservation and pollution control practices.
Creston Panthers saw an 11-point lead melt away to nothing in the fourth quarter here Friday night but battled back to hain their second victory of the season over Atlantic 79-71. The victory boosted the Panthers to 8-3 in the Hawkeye Eight and kept them in second place all alone.
