Possessing a handgun and ammunition has led to a 5-year prison term and 1-thousand 25-dollar fine for a Newton man with prior felony drug convictions in Poweshiek County. 26 year old Zachary Bryan Herr pleaded guilty to a December 28th Possession of a Firearm by a Felon charge. Just before 1 a.m. that Tuesday morning…officers carried out a search warrant at Herr’s residence in the 700-block of East 23rd Street South. Court documents say a 45-caliber handgun was found under a desk in his bedroom, and multiple rounds of ammunition were also recovered from the room. Officers also located two zip-lock bags, the court says contained a total of 3.9 grams of marijuana. A 3rd Offense Possession of a Controlled substance charge against Herr was dismissed, as part of a plea agreement District Court Judge Stacy Ritchie approved before sentencing. Herr’s drug convictions in Poweshiek County were from May 2018 and July 2019.
