The county has yet to receive its new k-9 and hopes to receive it within the next 2-3 months after training. The supervisors first met with the sheriff’s office on September 25th of 2023, and provided a letter of support for the program. Jefferson County law enforcement currently has only one K-9 unit and would like to acquire another. Due to that unit not being available if the officer is off duty or on vacation. The Sherriff’s department dose hope that the Fairfield police department will hire another K-9 unit in the near future.

It is estimated that the cost of training and acquiring the canine would be $13,500. The Sherriff’s Department has so far received over $10,000 from various public partners who support the k-9 unit program. Donations are welcome and can be accepted at the Jefferson County Law Center.
