A bill looking to end protections for gender identity fails to advance in Iowa House

DES MOINES, Iowa– Hundreds of trans-rights activists took over the statehouse on Wednesday.

Iowans showed up to protest a bill that would reclassify gender identity as a disability under Iowa’s civil rights code. Iowa State Representative Jeff Shipley, (R) from Van Buren County introduced the legislation a week ago.

The bill was unanimously struck down in a republican-controlled House. Shipley argued that the protests helped block a proposal that would have increased protection for gender identity.

The bill, after having an official vote, is not likely to advance any more this session. Unless there are changes to it or if lawmakers want to rehash it again weeks down the line.
