Eighth-ranked Nodaway Valley’s girls basketball squad ran their record to 15-2 and their current win streak to five games with wins in the last eight days.
Coming off of a loss Jan. 11 to then second-ranked Panorama, the Wolverines followed up with a win over Bedford. They then defeated Lenox 76-55 on Jan. 23, East Union 80-17 Friday, Jan. 26 and Earlham 61-54 Saturday, Jan. 27.
Most recently, the Wolverines were 67-29 winners over Southwest Valley, getting a big 11 first-half points from Jorja Holliday. She ended with 14. Senior guard Lindsey Davis scored 25 and sophomore Izzy Eisbach 18. In doing so, these seniors won their 77th game, becoming the winningest group of seniors in program history.
Eisbach poured in 27 points to supplement 19 from Davis against Earlham. The first half came fairly easily for the Wolverines, however they had to dig deep to fend off the Cardinals, who shot well in the second half. Holliday had 14 rebounds on the day.
Nodaway Valley got 25 points from Eisbach and 23 from Davis against East Union, with 10 also coming from senior Annika Nelson, who also had 10 rebounds. Eisbach made 11 steals. The Wolverines easily cruised to a 25-2 first-quarter lead and allowed just five points from the Eagles in the entire second half.
“We played great team basketball both offensively and defensively against East Union and in the first half with Earlham. We led after the first quarter Saturday and took a 35-15 lead into the locker room. We have to focus every minute, every possession the rest of our season on doing what makes us great,” NV head coach Brian Eisbach said. “Stats and accomplishments aside, if we are going to reach our goal, we have to play like we did Friday night and the first half against Earlham. We have to play defense as one heartbeat and we have to keep the ball moving on offense. If we do those things, we’ll be at our best when it matters most. I think our girls are excited and will step up their focus; they all want to keep this thing moving.”
