DES MOINES, IOWA — Two people – including a juvenile- suffered gunshot wounds after someone opened fire at a party hosted at an east side event center in Des Moines early Sunday morning.

An adult male injured in the shooting remains hospitalized with what police are calling a “life-threatening” injury. The juvenile also remains hospitalized but is expected to recover.

The shooting happened around 12:40 AM, according to police. Patrol officers responded to the sound of gunfire coming from a private event center located at 2134 E. Grand Avenue. When officers arrived they found two victims suffering from gunshot wounds but were also “met by an unruly and hostile crowd” at the scene.

Two people were taken into custody at the scene. 20-year-old Mazine Botrus John is charged with Interference with Official Acts and 21-year-old Abuk Amum Malual is charged with Assault on a Police Officer and Interference with Official Acts.

The names of the victims have not been released. The shooting remains under investigation.
