A Newton 19 year old has been sentenced for 1st Offense OWI in connection with an August motorcycle accident on Highway 14…just south of 1st Avenue West. Elijah Shannon Bruce pleaded guilty and has to spend two days in jail starting February 6th. District Associate Judge Steven Holwerda has also fined him 1-thousand 250-dollars, and he must undergo a substance abuse evaluation  and complete the DMACC Driving Under the Influence class. Newton Police claim a breathalyzer test put Bruce’s blood alcohol content at point 1-0-2. The then 18 year old took the test after telling police he fell off his motorcycle while attempting to do a wheelie for his friends. The Police report also states Bruce’s eyes were bloodshot and watery, he spoke with slurred speech, and had an odor of alcohol; but he denied drinking. The August 26th accident happened around 10:30 that Saturday night, and police reported no serious injuries.
